Dr. Henry Cabrera’s Passion Project – Lavender Waves Farm

Expansive. Calming. Breathtaking. Lavender Waves Farm is the realization of Dr. Henry Cabrera’s dream—to cultivate lavender and share its beauty with the community. Nestled in the heart of Rhode Island, this charming 14-acre farm once belonged to Gatewood Farms, a historic local landmark. Back in the 1940s, families visited Gatewood Farms to purchase agricultural goods from its on-site store. At the time, the farm primarily raised cows and pigs. A vintage sign reading “Gatewood Farm—Bacon and Sausage” still hangs in the barn, a nostalgic tribute to its past.

Farming has never been easy. Previous owners of Gatewood Farm had to sell parts of their land to sustain agricultural operations. Eventually, the Gatewood family moved away, and the property changed hands multiple times until 2016, when Dr. Henry Cabrera purchased it. Determined to restore the farm, he began upgrading its water system and installing electricity in the barn. He then constructed three stables, Dutch doors, and a poultry area. To accommodate a growing number of animals, he also added grazing pastures for sheep, alpacas, llamas, camels, and donkeys. As the restoration progressed, Cabrera laid the groundwork for what would soon become a thriving lavender farm.

In the summer of 2017, a custom-built gazebo was placed at the heart of the property, serving as the focal point of the lavender fields. The following year, the first circle of lavender plants was introduced, followed a second in 2019. Today, over 4,000 lavender plants, spanning 10 different varieties, flourish on the farm. 2020, Lavender Waves Farm opened its doors to the public, quickly becoming a beloved destination in the local community.

Lavender Waves Farm Operations

Dr. Cabrera, an anesthesiologist profession, dedicates his free time to maintaining the farm’s serene and picturesque environment. Depending on the season, the farm employs between three and ten workers. While lavender plants only bloom during certain months, farm duties are year-round, as the animals require daily care, including feeding and cleaning.

“It’s slower in the winter, but the farm never stops living,” Cabrera explains. Spring is dedicated to pruning lavender plants, which bloom prominently in June, with a second bloom occurring in October. A team of paid workers assists with plant cuttings, while volunteers from the Kingston Hill Garden Club of South Kingstown lend a hand as needed.

Lavender Waves Farm Livestock

One of the farm’s biggest attractions is its camels. Lavender Waves Farm is home to two 15-year-old Dromedary camels, Jack and Bingham—the only ones of their kind in Rhode Island. Unlike Bactrian camels, which have two humps and are native to colder climates in Asia, Dromedary camels have a single hump and are typically found in sub-Saharan regions. The farm also houses a three-year-old Bactrian camel named Humphrey.

“At Lavender Waves Farm, we are lucky enough to have three out of the five privately held [Rhode Island] camels,” Cabrera shares. “These giant animals are a spectacular addition to any event as they mesmerize guests with their incredible size.”

The Lavender Waves Experience

Visitors are captivated the farm’s tranquil and immersive atmosphere, with approximately 2,500 people visiting each year. Among Cabrera’s personal favorites are Dolly Llama, his pet llama, young Humphrey, and the farm’s picturesque landscape.

“I enjoy seeing everything well-manicured,” he says. “The wagon and entrance path are some of my favorite things on the farm. The path winds quietly through the property, all the while hiding the magnificent field just beyond view.”

For those seeking a more immersive experience, the farm offers a rustic Airbnb. Designed for couples looking for a romantic or relaxing retreat, the suite boasts reclaimed wood from a 150-year-old silo, rustic stone tiles, and wooden beams. The second floor features a four-post king-size bed crafted from reclaimed wood, offering a stunning view of the lavender fields. A reclaimed wood futon accommodates additional guests, while the kitchen and living room overlook the rolling waves of purple.

The suite’s bathroom features Estonian amethyst geode sinks and imported Italian granite. A rainfall, waterfall, and massage jet shower enhance the ultimate relaxation experience. Guests who book the suite gain full access to the farm, including private use of the gazebo. This exclusive getaway is reserved for adults, with no pets allowed.

Beyond the farm, visitors can explore near towns such as Westerly, Charlestown, Narragansett, and Newport. Foxwoods Casino is just a 35-minute drive away, while Mohegan Sun is 50 minutes away.

Lavender Waves Weddings & Memberships

Lavender Waves Farm also serves as a wedding venue, offering ceremonies and receptions through its exclusive membership program. Becoming a farm member grants special access to the lavender gardens and animals. Guests who purchase large quantities of lavender can also participate in an educational experience, gaining private access to the farm’s grounds.

Members can book private visits lasting between one and three hours. Wedding photographer Lynne raved about her experience at the venue:

Lavender Waves Farm: A Labor of Love

Steeped in agricultural history, Lavender Waves Farm is more than just a lavender field—it’s a tribute to the past and a vision for the future. In 2020, the granddaughter of Gatewood Farm’s original owners returned to visit her childhood home. She was overcome with nostalgia as she witnessed the land’s transformation, now flourishing once again.

Visitors to the farm can still see the white house on the hill, where the Gatewood family once lived. Dr. Cabrera himself resides in the old store that once sold fresh produce.

“The unique design of the farm was done to create a special place of beauty, peace, and luxury for visitors,” the farm’s official website states. “ being able to sell the lavender as well as offer the opportunity for a limited number of guests to visit the farm, they will experience a working farm and have the ability for the community to have a place of gathering amongst the rolling waves of lavender.”
